China’s universities have continued their upward progress in the annual QS World University Rankings®, with Peking University and Tsinghua University both now ranked among the leading 50 institutions in the world. There are now eight Chinese universities in the global top 200, one more than in 2010.
The rankings were topped by the University of Cambridge for the second successive year, ahead of Harvard, MIT, Yale and Oxford. There are 13 US universities in the top 20, and 70 in the top 300.
Despite their improvements, Peking and Tsinghua rank lower than Hong Kong’s three leading universities, HKU (22), CUHK (37) and HKUST (40). HKU was the top-ranked Asian institution, followed by Tokyo University (25) and National University of Singapore (28), with Peking and Tsinghua placed ninth and tenth in Asia.
“China’s best universities have very strong academic reputations, with Peking University rated 18th in the world by global academics”, said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS. “However, only one Chinese university makes the top 200 for citations per faculty member. Government investment may have increased the number of papers being published by Chinese academics, but they are not yet having as great an impact within global academia as those of their international peers.”
Universities throughout Asia performed strongly in this year’s rankings following large-scale government investment programs. Out of 25 Asian universities in the top 300, 21 improved on their 2010 position.
“Government funding for technology-focused research is eroding the dominance of Western comprehensive universities”, states John O’Leary, member of the QS Advisory Board. “The average age of the top 100 has dropped by seven years since 2010, reflecting the emergence of newer specialist institutions, particularly in Asia”.
The QS World University Rankings® are among the best-known comparisons of international higher education standards, and are based on academic reputation, employer reputation, student/faculty ratio, research citations per faculty, and proportion of international students and staff. The research for this year’s rankings included surveys of over 33,000 global academics and 16,000 graduate employers, the largest of their kind ever conducted.
