University of Leuven launches new ‘Technology for Decision Makers’ programme for high-potential professionals
The University of Leuven (KU Leuven) is unveiling a new executive programme – Technology for Decision Makers – for high-potential professionals in all sectors seeking to acquire operational and strategic expertise in technology and innovation. “Due to the scope and speed of innovation, decision makers risk acting without a full understanding of its drivers and consequences,” says Professor Karen Maex, Vice Rector Science, Engineering and Technology at the University of Leuven. “This programme was created to maximise decision makers’ ability to function effectively in today’s innovation ecosystem.”
“Society faces enormous challenges and many of the solutions to these challenges will emerge out of the world of science and technology – that is, out of the innovation ecosystem. The University of Leuven plays a leading role in the innovation ecosystem, both locally and globally, and this new programme provides participants with the tools needed to thrive in it as well,” says Professor Maex. Created for professionals in both the public and private sectors, the programme offers individualised training in strategic thinking and innovation management including systems analysis, scenario planning and vision development. It is open to international participants and results in a fully accredited Master’s degree.
The programme’s approach resonates with high-level executives: “Understanding and leveraging the benefits of technology is crucial to any healthy company, from tech start-ups and spin-offs to multinational food companies like Kellogg. The organisers of the Technology for Decision Makers programme are keenly aware of that,” says Margaret Bath, Senior Vice President for Research, Quality and Technology at Kellogg Company. “Innovation in science and technology relies on healthy internal and external networks – between knowledge institutions like the University of Leuven, venture firms, established businesses, innovation brokers, government agencies and other actors,” says Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre) and alumnus of the University of Leuven.
The programme includes modules in ‘technology drivers’, ‘systems thinking and policymaking’ and ‘future scenario-building’, as well as a participant-tailored case study and a thesis. The multidisciplinary team of instructors is drawn from the top echelons of the private sector and academia. “The curriculum is unique in that it takes the strategic profile of each individual participant as its starting point,” says programme director Erik Mathijs. “This ensures that the skills and knowledge gained in the programme are very closely linked to the needs, skills and goals of the individual participant. This maximises the participant’s effectiveness and boosts innovation potential in the workplace.”
Practical information
The programme’s lectures, seminars, discussion sessions, scenarios and workshops are held during nine residential weeks (Tuesday to Saturday) from January 2013 to April 2014 at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.
